“Fawnskin” is the general designation for the residential and commercial settlement located on the north shore of Big Bear Lake. The area known as Fawnskin occupies both sides of State Hwy 38 from the Big Bear dam to Stanfield Cutoff, and the highway is better known as “North Shore Drive” to locals. Fawnskin is bordered on the north by the National Forest, and on the south by North Shore Drive and/or the lake itself.
Fawnskin was one of the earliest areas settled in the Big Bear Valley, and as such is home to several local historical landmarks such as the Pedersen Sawmill where lumber for early home construction was milled, and the historic “Fawn Lodge” in the center of “downtown” Fawnskin. Some of the homes and commercial buildings in Fawnskin are among the oldest in the entire Valley. It is also the gateway to history-rich Holcomb Valley, where gold-mining and cattle grazing predominated in the late 1800’s.
Offering some of the best views in Big Bear, Fawnskin is popular for those who prefer an “away from it all” mountain experience. A large majority of the homes in the area are second homes, and a quiet atmosphere is the hallmark of Fawnskin life. Lakefront homes on North Shore Drive command spectacular panoramic views of the lake and south shore mountains, and hillside homes offer vistas all the way to snow-capped San Gorgonio in the distance.
With the exception of the level shoreline areas bordering North Shore Drive, most of Fawnskin’s topography is gentle to moderate upslope, with small to large homes reached by picturesque winding roads. With the amazing views to take in, it’s no wonder that “expansive decking” and “lots of windows” are terms you will see often in descriptions of Fawnskin homes for sale.
Recreation opportunities abound on the north shore, with multiple access points to the National Forest, public lake access and fishing/picnic spots, public boat launch ramps, the USFS Serrano campground and Meadow’s Edge picnic area, Woodland Interpretive Trail, two private marinas, the Alpine Pedal Path, and the variety of events and activities available at the renowned Big Bear Discovery Center.
It’s safe to say there is something for everyone in the Fawnskin home market, from cute cabins, to vintage homes, to contemporary lakefront masterpieces! Priced from the very affordable to the extravagant, there is something for every budget as well.
Take a look at the “other side of the lake” if you’re looking for full-time or vacation living in a pristine mountain environment with a real sense of privacy and a decidedly “laid back” lifestyle!
