Mountain Lake Fishing

Big Bear Lake, CA has long been known for fishing and  the size of its trout and bass. The lake is stocked with trout by the California Department of Fish and Game and is supported locally. It has been used as a fishing source since its first inhabitants the Serrano Indians, created a small Dam.

Advice, equipment and boats can be obtained at all of Big Bear’s Marinas.

  • Big Bear Marina is located at 500 Paine Court, near Big Bear Village. You can reach them with questions at (909) 866-3218.
  • Pleasure Point Marina is east of the Village in Highway 18, 603 Landlock Landing Road, (909) 866-2455.
  • If you need a marina on the North Shore, there’s North Shore Landing, 38573 North Shore Dr, (909) 878-4386. You’ll find them on Highway 38, several miles east of Fawnskin.

The past winter’s snowfall left Big Bear Lake overflowing. Although fishable shoreline has been reduced, great spots are still plentiful. Since fish love the colder areas, you’ll find fishermen covering the rocks by the Dam early in the morning. You can also take advantage of either the east or west boat launch. These public boat launches have great docks for fishing. Bring a folding chair and a cooler along with your gear. Stanfield Cutoff is another fisherman favorite. You can park your car right next to the lake and fish. It’s busy on both sides in almost all weather.

Archers are sometimes found in the cove around Fawnskin on the North Shore. The sport is starting to pick up in popularity. They’ve also been spotted, waist deep with their bows, on the east side of Baker Pond across from the Big Bear Lake Convention Center.

Whether you access our mountain lake by boat or enjoy it from the shoreline be sure to have your passes and permits. Parking in the National Forest, at the Public Boat Ramps and at some points around the lake requires an Adventure Pass; that can be picked up at many stores around the Valley. Fishing licenses can also be obtained locally. Come enjoy our moderate mountain temperatures and our four seasons of fun.
