The Big Bear Lake Area is a Photographer’s Dream
Here are some general locations you can visit for great outdoor photo shoots. Grab 3 friends with cameras and plan some spontaneous, winning snaps!
If you’re getting up for sunrise pictures, you’ll want to go beyond the 2 lake crossings, though sometimes, these are the best places. Sunrises over water, are best seen from Stanfield Cutoff looking east over Baker Pond. Another good place is the west end of the airport, at Division. Pull in and park at the northwest corner. Walk along the shore of Baker Pond. This is a lovely place to watch the valley wake up. We’ve seen coyotes, hawks and waterfowl in the early morning hours.
Further along Big Bear Lake, a good place to stop is the shoreline by the Solar Observatory. There is plenty of room to plan your pictures.
Most of the year, you’ll have a fairly clear shot from Windy Point down to the dam, on the Fawnskin side of the lake. You can get lots of shots just pulling out every few hundred yards.
Sunsets over water are a major inspiration. Great places to start are still the 2 lake crossings, Division and Stanfield Cutoff. You can sit in your car and snap up winning shots. If you are in town, the Meadow Park swim beach has some great locations to set up your camera.
Again, head to the Solar Observatory and pick a place on the shoreline. There are also a couple great areas as you round the curves into Fawnskin. On a good day, there may be fog coming over the dam to spice the mix.
For great views from a height looking down on the lake and valley, head behind the Big Bear Village. Drive up Pine Knot Avenue and around any of the curvy roads. Follow around from Knickerbocker or Pine Knot and turn right on Cameron Drive. Follow Cameron all the way around and up Ironwood Drive. If you haven’t yet, stop at the top, Sky High Drive. Also close to the Village, you can drive up Maryland Rd, off of Knickerbocker Rd.
Out from the village, take Big Bear Blvd east to the signal light after the supermarkets; Stanfield Cutoff. Turn right at the AM/PM gas station onto Starvation Flats Rd. Head up the first left, Eagle Ridge, just past the AM/PM Market. Take Eagle Ridge all the way to the top. Great sunsets may be had here, as well as some great shots of the slopes.
