Autumn in the Mountains

In these next few weeks, the Big Bear area will be putting on the Fall Colors. Already, the Jeffrey Pine needles are turning orange. Some of the Ornamental Maples have turned a deep red. A few of the Quaking Aspens are losing their vibrant green. We actually saw yellow Aspens behind the bank. Late season flowers are blooming, with Sunflowers, Black Eyed Susans and Rabbit Bush really drawing the bees and butterflies. Bring your camera. The best Fall viewing is coming. Big Bear is famous for our Fall display. You can … [Read more...]

Big Bear Lake Events

Summertime Big Bear Lake Old Miner’s Days has been a local Big Bear tradition spanning more than sixty years. Its roots are found in our local gold mining history. A sizeable gold discovery was made in 1849 by William Holcomb. While out hunting for bear, he came across gold bearing quartz. His discovery caused “Holcomb’s Valley” to fill with miners, barely missing becoming the seat of the County of San Bernardino (questionable election results). Local gold miners were able to average an income of three dollars a … [Read more...]

Big Bear with Huell Howser

When Huell Howser came to Big Bear a few years ago to film his “Road Trip” series, the whole town was buzzing with excitement. I never caught that first airing of the Big Bear episode so when I saw that it was going to be shown again last week, I had to watch. I have to admit I’ve always liked Huell’s homespun approach to travel journalism and I was truly impressed with what he did for our little burg. The day started off with a trip to the Discovery Center for some general information and then he got into a jeep … [Read more...]
